18th Century Gustavian Sofa with Linen Cushions
Art.nr: 1794
Höjd : 81 / ca 48 cm
Längd : 217 cm
Bredd : 62 cm
18th century gustavian sofa from Sweden. The sofa is from the late 1700s and made in painted pine. The Swedish name for this model sofa is ”trågsoffa” and this particular one is dry scraped by hand down to the original paint. The sofa is very well-made and combines multiple difficult skills. For example the sloping short sides and rounded finishes on the armrests. This sofa is elegant and restrained with subtle details, from the gentle curve and slope of the armrest to the fluted decor on the legs. The shape of the sofa makes it look inviting and the cushions completes the feeling. Elegance is the word for this sofa and it only grows in esteem the longer you look.
The sofa has strong legs with a straight and tapered shape, the taller legs were harder to make and something only some carpenters could do. The middle front leg is more recent, likely from the late 1800s. The cushions are new, bespoke and made by hand with upholstery in linen fabric. The total depth of the sofa is circa 62 cm but with the cushion the seat depth is around 50 cm.
