Unusual Iron Lantern from Sweden
Height : 40 cm
Diam 14 cm
Unusual iron lantern from Sweden made during the mid 1800s. The lantern is folk art and has a cut-out pattern that’s been made by hand. This type of lantern is known as “spiklykta”. They were used by women when they attended church during the cold winter months. They’d light the candle and wear the lanterns under their skirts for warmth.
This particular one is in attractive untouched condition and is also unusually large. It’s possible to use with a lit candle but if so, please keep in mind that it becomes very warm. The lantern itself is 40 cm high and it also has a loop at the top to suspend it from.
