Unusual antique country sideboard from northern Sweden dating from around 1820. This type of furniture is often referred to in Sweden as a “mössbord”. These small sideboards were traditionally placed just inside the entrance, where one could put down one’s hat or cap on the top — hence the informal name.
This charming and unique furniture is made by hand in solid pine. Untouched original condition with the first layer of original paint. The original painted finish has survived and after 200 years has developed a rustic and naturally worn patina. The doors and drawer have hand-carved, fluted wooden details.
The original lock is missing and was replaced at some point during the late 19th century with a simple iron clasp, which has itself become part of the piece’s history. The top consists of two wide boards with a small dry age-related split between them. The split is old and the construction is otherwise sound, solid and stable.
