Large blue pine box made during the 19th century from Hälsingland in northern Sweden. Likely from the village Norrala. The box was likely a friargåva, a gift given from a man to the woman he was courting. This box has a dating, 1855 and a woman’s monogram. Because Swedish last names were based on the fathers name with the addition of -son and -dotter respectively, the D in the monogram shows it was a woman’s initials. Untouched original paint and healthy and solid wood. The lock is missing. Boxes like this were for storing valuables, such as jewellery or bibles.
